We’re pleased to be supporting this exciting event from Screen Yorkshire on the topical subject of Mobile Apps, which is being held at Barnsley’s Digital Media Centre on Wednesday 21st July.  We all love to use apps,  and with the growth of mobile web there are many key questions facing businesses -  such as:  are business models for apps working; how do I exploit apps to promote my business, and how do I get started?

This event is for developers, agencies, brands and individuals, and aims to help provide some of the answers to these questions, and many more, by putting you in touch with industry experts - both global players, and regional businesses who will share their experiences of developing apps.

The BBC has announced the companies who have been selected to take part in the new @North commissioning initiative being led by BBC Children’s (who are part of the BBC move to Salford in 2011). In Yorkshire there are 20 successful companies from South and West Yorkshire, reflecting the strength of the digital sector in both Leeds and Sheffield.

These companies will now work in small groups with senior subject experts in both children’s content and technology, to learn more about working with the BBC and develop their ideas at intensive workshop days. Four final projects will be commissioned  for CBBC and Cbeebies.

Screen Yorkshire has a tender opportunity to deliver a digital marketing campaign for the cross region project NorthernNet. The tender deadline is open now, with a closing date of noon on Friday 22nd January 2010.

The outline of the objectives for the campaign are:

- To raise awareness of the NorthernNet brand across the North of England within the digital and creative industries and related media channels

- Devise and buy a web media campaign to market and raise awareness of the NorthernNet brand across the creative and digital industry as a whole

- Devise and buy a web media campaign to market and raise awareness of the NorthernNet brand with key digital and creative sectors e.g. animation, music etc.

- Generate excitement and engagement in the opportunities available from the NorthernNet innovations and collaborations project within the creative and digital industries

- Promote the use of the media access bureaus (physical access to the NorthernNet system in venues across the North) and the role  NorthernNet infrastructure plays in delivering competitive advantage to key sector SMEs

Inspiral is teaming up with the world’s leading digital media and leadership educator, Hyper Island, to run two unique training courses in Yorkshire & Humber throughout January and February 2010. Opera North are no stranger to pushing the boundaries of creativity, so when award winning Coolpink suggested a take on a classic kids game to generate further ticket sales the response was a quick yes. Yorkshire will host the UK’s major video-games festival on 27th and 28th October to debut at The Royal Armouries in Leeds. Thousands of Yorkshire video-gamers will get a chance to play the latest game releases before anyone else in the UK. Screen Yorkshire and Game Republic have partnered with Eurogamer to ensure 4,000 games enthusiasts will be able to sample games that won’t be released until Christmas 2009 and Spring 2010. Taking place alongside the Expo is the GamesIndustry.biz Career Fair, the UK’s premier recruitment event for the games industry and a number of Yorkshire’s leading games companies will be exhibiting and giving careers advice. Geoff Gifford and I attended the Innovator ‘09 awards at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 5th March 2009. We were pretty excited/nervous/pleased to be shortlisted in the Innovation Catalyst award for our coworking space here at Old Broadcasting House. Surprisingly the digital sector wasn’t well represented as from what we can gather it was just NTI Leeds that made the shortlist in any of the categories. This doesn’t represent the true picture of what’s happening in our region in the digital area. Maybe people are not applying as they are just too busy innovating and working on getting business to fill out the application. (more…)
