PHP : The Tools of the Trade
Writing code is one thing; however this one-day course covers everything BUT the code, showing you all the other allied and essential skills you’ll need to work with PHP and the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack as a whole. The aim is to enable you to move your code around and measure it - both its quality as a standalone codebase, and its performance under load. We’ll look at the tools for editing, analysing and deploying PHP applications, and have hands-on time to try out all of these.
This course is one of a family of THREE one day courses designed by Lorna Mitchell. These are aimed at PHP developers who want to take their skills to the next level, boost productivity and develop robust systems. An experienced web developer working particularly with PHP, the LAMP stack and related technologies, Lorna’s also a prolific conference speaker, and writer. She recently co-authored PHP Master: Write Cutting-Edge Code which was published in September 2011. All delegates receive a copy of this book.

Databases and PHP
This one-day course dispenses a big dose of data-related theory, helping you to make the step up from the role of web developer to that of a web-based software developer.
Firstly, we’ll take a close look at data theory, designing database schemas to support the serious applications we will build on top of them. We’ll study, and also put in to practice, techniques for designing data structures, and then learn how to optimise queries.
Secondly, we’ll approach databases from a PHP angle - covering the PDO library, an excellent object-oriented way of interacting with the database. We’ll analyse the features this extension provides and then use it to manipulate database structures via the web.
