On Monday 2nd August nti Leeds will be welcoming the BBC back to Old Broadcasting House for their exciting recruitment event. They are looking for 11 people to take part in a great BBC experience with Children In Need, working with every local radio station in the North and getting a foot in the door for BBC jobs coming up in the next few months.

Guests will have the chance to polish up their CV, get to grips with the new BBC North jobs website and be helped towards being in the best possible position to bag a job with the BBC

We’re holding an open evening on Wednesday 21st  July so you can come along and meet Old Broadcasting House coworkers. The event starts at 6pm and closes at 8pm. Guests are invited to come along and meet our members in an informal, relaxed setting. Raffi Krikorian will be speaking about his career in technology and innovation, working as a hacker, writer, and a tinkerer. Most recently, he has become a member of the API/Platform team at Twitter. He is also authoring the forthcoming book “re:sources”.

Raffi has worked for MIT’s Media Lab, written for O’Reilly Media, founding an R&D lab and working for Twitter in Silicon Valley. Previously, he was a co-founder in WattzOn.com - which was named by Business Week as the “Best Idea” in 2008. (more…)

All budding landscape photographer’s will be delighted to know that Exposure Leeds is to present Tim Parkin. Tim produces some simply stunning landscape photogaphy with his understanding of form and light.

To gain greater insight into his amazing work, come along on Wednesday 7th April, 6pm to 9pm at Old Broadcasting House to listen to Tim talk about his ideas, experience and portfolio. The nti Works scheme has been praised by the Yorkshire Post as it featured last week on Thursday 25th March, as an article in the jobs section of the newspaper. If you missed it, keep reading below:

Graduates at Leeds Metropolitan University and its Northern Technology Institute (NTI) are receiving a helping hand as a scheme designed to help them into work has received extra funding.

Regional Development Agency Yorkshire Forward has backed the scheme that helps digital and creative graduates access training and gain business skills needed to set up their own businesses. By the time the project finished in June, the number of Yorkshire and Humber graduates involved in the training will have reached 60. The NTI Works programme, which provides advice, training, guidance and mentoring to recent graduates, has proved popular since its launch in 2009.

Linda Broughton, Head of the Northern Technology Institute, said “Being part of the co-working community here at Old Broadcasting House offers a unique opportunity for the graduates to learn from other s who have been through the same experience.”

Talk About Local is a project to give people in their communities a powerful online voice. Old Broadcasting House is now home to The Guardian Local project, and on Saturday 17th April an Un-Conference is to be held in partnership with Talk About Local here in Leeds. A similar event was held in Stoke-on-Trent during October and we will be using the Un-Conference format in the hope to have some of the very best hyperlocal publishers and special guests attending on the day.

To book your place there are 50 tickets available at Eventbrite here. There will be more given out after local bloggers in Yorkshire, and the North East have got their tickets.

It’s official - our iPhone Apps Development course is the best in the world. Australian based mobile and web developer, Patrick Dockhorn from jTribe came to Old Broadcasting House to attend nti’s  January iPhone Development course. Patrick used the web to seek out the course he was looking for, and after seeing what nti had to offer, he decided to travel over 10,000 miles to Leeds to take forward his plans to expand  jTribe into new online and external revenue streams. Congratulations to Old Broadcasting House coworking members Gerard Savva and Becky Edlin, who joined the Innovation Showcase in September 2009 to develop their business. Since then, Magpie has produced high profile campaigns for clients such as the BBC, National Union of Students (NUS), as well as Universities and Students’ Unions across the country.

The duo also work with local businesses relying heavily on student-spend, and national charities who are looking to increase student involvement. Magpie’s hard work has recently paid off with a nomination for the prestigious Sir Peter Thompson Award for Enterprise and Business. (more…)

A great coup for Leeds - the city is the first to be home to Guardian Local. The Guardian Local Leeds site is a collaborative community journalism initiative to provide local online news.  We’re pleased to welcome Leeds Beatblogger, John Baron, and Guardian Local launch editor Sarah Hartley as our newest coworking members at Old Broadcasting House.

Guardian Local aims to explore new models for journalism and social engagement through a mix of reporting, collaboration engagement with local communities, organisations and groups and aggregation.

Check out their  review of the Leeds Girl Geek Dinner on 11th February that featured two inspirational speakers from the games industry.

On Wednesday 3rd February at 6pm to 9pm, Exposure Leeds will be meeting at Old Broadcasting House with a special photography focus led by John Dolan. A beginners guide to Photoshop will give you some useful hits and tips about what to do with your photos once they have been taken. John and Mark Skeet will review the work-flow process once a shoot has been completed.

After the main presentations there will be a question and answer session, an opportunity for the group to discuss the many aspects of image selection and processing.

During December, Innovation Showcase coworker Tim Waters joined us here at Old Broadcasting House. Tim is a freelance geospatial developer and consultant who runs he’s own company called Think Where. Tim also volunteers with OpenStreetMap (OSM), a free editable map of the whole world. OSM allows users to view, edit and use geographical data in a collaborative way. (more…)

This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people within the creative, digital industries and network in a relaxed and friendly environment. Feel free to come along, Open Coffee is held on the first Tuesday of every month.
