Open Source Case Studies

Open Source gives TicketArena.co.uk the leading edge

Owner of TicketArena.co.uk, Reshad Hossenally had a vision of a simple, safe system for people to buy tickets online, which has been achieved with tremendous results.  Commenting on the end results, Reshad said: “I’m surprised at how easy this solution is to use, the use of open source software has enabled us to save valuable resources and given us the budget to invest in other parts of our business and develop leading services”.

The system is called ‘Event Genius’ and is the complete solution for event venues and organisers all over the country. It gives total control over your event form marketing, to ticketing, to access control no matter the size or event. Event Genius is the clever system powering the hugely successful Ticketarena.co.uk, which is used by leading organisers and venues in the UK to sell tickets.

Behind the scenes of a user-friendly web site, a number of different technologies combine to book, take payment and send an SMS barcode “ticket” to the customer; which is then scanned at the door of the event.

On the back of the new revenue, Reshad plans some new features and enhancements to grow the offering further.

The e-commerce system was put together by award winning Leeds based web design company: Creode. James Hannaford explains how they fused together a number of Open Source products to satisfy the client’s needs. “We decided to use a combination of existing products, so we had a barebone structure in place to start the development work. We estimate the cost savings, when compared to building a completely new system from the ground up, run to about 60%”. James went on to say that the “development time is also dramatically reduced, so our customers start making money from their investment far earlier. In TicketArena’s case, this allowed them to get up and running for when the students returned from their Christmas break”.

Geoff Gifford from Open Source for Business agrees with James. “This is a prime example of how we can leverage the benefits offered by Open Source technologies in a business environment.” The benefits, to which Mr Gifford refers, include: stability, security, scalability, standardisation and cost - to mention but a few!

“It seems that the biggest blockers to Open Source adoption are: access to skills; and the issue of supporting these products in an ongoing fashion. Having said that, many businesses are using Open Source products without being aware that they are doing so. Apache (web server software), for example, serves more content than any other web server in the world.”
