Twestival
On Thursday 12th February, new social networking site Twitter started running it’s new worldwide festival event called Twestival in more than 175 cities around the world. Organised by volunteers in each city, ranging from Beijing and Sydney to Capetown and Lisbon, Twestival allowed the Twitter community to socialise offline and enjoy food, drink and entertainment, whilst also raising money and awareness for ‘charity:water’ that was highlighted by Jeff Allen.
Leeds event was hosted here at Old Broadcasting House and organised by nti’s Linda Broughton and twitter fan second year student Ben Saffer, Leeds Met Events Management, who volunteered to be part of this event and help make the Leeds event a memorable one.
James Ward who was part of organising the event expressed his delight in the core values of using Twitter. “I think that the best thing about Twitter is it’s generousity, it’s openess of sharing like we are tonight”. Thanks to organisers and supporting businesses realed off a huge list, that showed how much community was at the heart of the event.
Michael Heap better known as @LVTRII, is an avid Twitter user studing Computing at Leeds Met. Michael gave his reasons for why he wanted to be apart of this landmark occasion.
“I was wanting to put names to faces which is why I came. I found out about Twitter through my course and haven’t stopped using it since. It was a targetted market of users until Stephen Fry recently appeared on Jonathan Ross and now everyone’s using it!”
Linda Broughton, Head of the Northern Technology Institute explained the appeal of Twitter: “It’s a really easy way to keep in touch with people. Networking is a huge part of business in certain sectors, and if you can’t go to every event then Twitter is a great way of staying informed about things.”
