Managing the Magento with Joseph Edmonds

Joseph Edmonds is an ecommerce specialist who runs Edmonds Commerce. He has recently created and taught on the new nti Magento course. Joseph answers some questions about he’s career so far…

Q. What brought you to the Innovation Showcase at Old Broadcasting House?

A. I am a full time PHP developer specialising in ecommerce, particularly PHP based open source ecommerce platforms like osCommerce and Magento. I own and operate under the Edmonds Commerce brand.

I found out about nti when I decided to become Zend certified. A course was a good idea to fill in the holes around my PHP knowledge. I then sat the exam, which I am happy to say I passed.

nti and Old Broadcasting House events led me into Open Source for Business opportunities. When I was shown around the coworking space, I was instantly impressed and knew it was an ideal place to base myself.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?

A. I enjoy the amount of variety that I get from working for a large number of different clients. This can be anything from 2 hour customisation or extensions, right through to full scale projects.

To me, ecommerce is the most exciting area to work in. It is driven by results, efficiency and stability with all kinds of challenges and constantly stretching.

Q. What first attracted you to using the world’s fastest growing eCommerce platform, Magento?

A. As a challenger to osCommerce’s crown as the biggest and most popular open source shopping cart, Magento raised the bar in terms of quality, architecture and maybe more importantly, the business model behind it. Varien, the company behind Magento, seemed to be a company on a mission. Now, everyone involved in ecommerce has heard of it.

There is an expensive Enterprise Edition, that helps to maintain the Community edition and the community at large. Magento is a solid investment for any business deciding on what platform to choose and concerned about the long term stability and road map for that platform.

Q. As the nti Magento course teacher, how have attendees been responding to the training?

A. The response has been positive. The major point being that people leave with a clearer understanding of the basic, foundational principles of Magento, and an overview of some of the complexities that make it very powerful. Newcomers to the platform have found parts a little tricky.

Q. Who has attended the Magento course, so far?

A. There has been a cross section of business owners who have a Magento store. Also, web designers and developers have been researching the platform for their clients.

The Magento course is designed for business owners or staff who are or will be running a Magento based ecommerce business. It will enable your business to get the maximum return on your investment into Magento by ensuring you and your staff are using the system to it’s fullest capabilities.

By leveraging the full power of the platform, clients can quickly recoup the cost, saving time and money by doing it the right way, first time.

Q. What are the benefits of using Magento and attending the nti training course?

A. Magento allows you to gain a competitive advantage by fast tracking your skill level on the newest and most powerful open source Ecommerce Package to date. Your competitors might not discover it for months. In the meantime you could have mastered it!

Q. Why would you encourage interested readers to come and do it at nti?

A. The facilities are purpose built with powerful new Mac’s. Lunch and refreshments are all supplied on the premises, allowing us to get the most out of the day without distraction. I would recommend training for nti!
