Leeds Light Night 2009
Residents of all ages were invited to come and take part on Friday 9th October, in a completely free celebration of the city™s diverse and exciting arts scene. The spectacular annual Light Night arts event took place in Leeds city centre with several contributions from Old Broadcasting House.
The combination of textiles and sonic art, gave birth to special creatures, knitted from wire and intercepting unheard signals from the atmosphere to translate them into sound. ˜Electric Pets™ by Louise Atkinson and Innovation Showcase coworker Chris Martin, exhibited their animals for attendees to play with. The neighbouring exihibition was by Ben Byford with ‘My Galaxy’. The interactive installation allowed the audience to create their own new worlds/networks and explore notions of connectivity, randomness, godliness, and technology in the information race.
Leeds Met’s Our City Our Music project, a location-based album using GPS technology, showcased sounds and stories from Leeds™ emerging musicians and filmmakers. The audience heard and saw music videos from urban artists in the locations where they were originally filmed. At intervals on the night, the city tour left Old Broadcasting House with an excited and adventurous audience. For more information about the project email info@ourcityourmusic.com, or visit the website at http://www.ourcityourmusic.com/.
At Temple Works™ fellow coworkers Dave Lynch, Stuart Childs & Scott Towler took audiences on a free torch lit tour through the secret spaces and the exhibition of workers ”Final Days”. Once Europe’s biggest room, Grade-1-Listed Temple Works was awoken by the pillars of light and sonic industrial scores: taking visitors from the extraordinary to the sublime.
Millennium Square hosted awe-inspiring moving projections on the Civic Hall and a chance to draw with light for viewing on the BBC Big Screen. The night was a successful showcase of the arts scene in Leeds. Visit the website for full details of all Light Night shows and installations.
