Ingres Workshop

Ingres Corporation is a leading provider of open source information management services to the enterprise and was welcomed into Old Broadcasting House on Wednesday 26th November 2008. Ingres provided a unique opportunity of experiencing industry training and appreciate the application of technology in the ‘real world’.

The buzz around Open Source is an exciting door that is allowing people to enter into the Linux world full of free and accessible networks and software packages. Initially starting as Open Source material before the well known concept began, Ingres manages vast amounts of packages including JBoss, Tomcat, Samba and Sybase SQL server; to build links between gaps for a coherent operating and database business system.

With over 30,000 people subscribed (10,000 of which are paying customers) Neil Warnock was quick to identify the low risk in Open Source technology, maintaining the opinion that an apparently free software had a ‘pay as you go’ approach that made it managable. However, caution was given that pinpointed it’s nature as unsupported and unregulated giving greater validation and worth to Ingres!

A question and answer time opened with response to the security risk in Open Source technology. Soon to be disarmed with the come back of “it works better this way. The more people that have access to the software the faster it gets better”, once again highlighted the benefits outweighing concern.

A positive outlook on Ingres made the workshops attentive with an attitude that was willing to learn more. Workshops included Open Source Technology, Java Development, Business Intelligence, OPENROAD and Database Management. Mike Flower, Director of Education at Ingres hosted Database Management. A workbook gave steps to getting Ingres up and running, giving insight into what capablities and functionality the information store had for importing, filtering, linking and communicating.

It was a valuable practical day for all attendee’s, sparking food for thought amongst the Open Source Community as it continues to grow in use towards business.
