Green computer issues are of growing concern for the business, social and environmental impact in the 21st century. The almost-universal adoption of Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) is leaving a significant carbon footprint. As part of this postgraduate training course, you will investigate green ICT technologies, assess the environmental impact of ICT and look at how companies can streamline their systems, increase sustainability and save energy costs. You will research and design real-life practical strategies that provide sustainable computing for the future.

Career Prospects

This is an expanding area with predicted growth for employment within the field. Current opportunities exist within environmentally aware organisations, such as sustainability or renewable energy companies. General businesses also employ carbon or environmental officers, and developing legislation and commercial pressures are already leading to the sustainable development of ‘Green IT’ roles across diverse sectors of the economy.

Core Modules

- Develop Green IT Strategies (20 credit points)

This module aims to give you the ability to develop, implement, monitor and control an organisational strategy to achieve green objectives. A range of approaches and techniques will be introduced which will enable you to: develop awareness of the factors and issues which are present in a particular organisational setting; generate a set of objectives for a green ICT strategy; and develop a green ICT strategy and implementation plan with appropriate mechanisms for control.

- Green Computing Technologies (20 credit points)

This module aims to investigate and identify available technologies which could reduce the impact on the environment within an organisation, from an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) perspective. The module will critically evaluate available systems and technologies aimed to reduce the impact of an organisation’s ICT on the enivornment.

- ICT and the Environment (20 credit points)

This module aims to give you an understanding of the environmental impact of an organisation, from an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) perspective. The module will identify and assess key environmental issues over wide ranging aspects of an organisation’s operation. The module will enable you to assess, or audit an organisation’s environmental impact from an ICT perspective.

- Responsibly Green (20 credit points)

This module aims to give you both a wide ranging awareness of social, ethical and legal issues relevant to the green business agenda and the ability to critically reflect on the implications of these issues for the exercise of corporate stewardship. Emphasis will be placed upon helping you to develop your own professional ethics as reflective practitioners in a constantly changing environment.

- Sustainable Computing (20 credit points)

This module deals with the environmental impact of ICT equipment throughout their life cycle from their production, use and eventual disposal or recycling. Issues related to cost and impact of production and an environmental business model are discussed.

- Research Practice (20 credit points)

This module aims to develop your awareness of the methods and skills which are required in order to carry out Masters level research successfully, and to reflect critically on your own development in the context of your chosen programme of study.

- Dissertation (40 credit points)

The dissertation/final project aims to provide an opportunity for you to engage in research and advanced scholarship in a subject area that is appropriate to your course but of your own choosing.
