Green IT - About
Green IT is a collaborative project, that brings together academic and technical colleagues from across Leeds Metropolitan University - Faculty of Information & Technology. Led by Professor Colin Pattinson, the UK’s first MSc Green Computing award has been launched as a response to the growing increase in Green IT.
Running Stream Professor of Mobile and Converging Technologies, Colin has been active in computer network management and performance measurement research for most of his career at Leeds Metropolitan University, and has been awarded a £50,000 grant from the Joint Information Systems Committee’s Greening ICT Programme. The funding will support exploration of lessening the environmental impacts in computer service provision.
The “ThinC Efficiency” project will compare the energy consumption of traditional desk top computers with that of thin client systems - the users access to central servers which do the processing and data storage. This project aims to explore the application of IT-based energy management systems in Higher and Further Education.
