This course introduces you to the page layout and design applications of InDesign.  The course starts from the program basics and quickly builds knowledge and confidence in how to navigate the application and use the tools to create layouts from single pages to complex multi-page documents.

Recommended for:


Anyone working or moving in to the field of digital publishing. If you are responsible for creating and managing material such as business cards, letterheads, company leaflets, brochures, and manuals this course covers the the core software  skills that provide the foundation for this.  No previous knowledge of Adobe InDesign is required. Some knowledge of Photoshop will be useful although not essential

Day 1
Lesson Description
1 Introduction The opening module aims to build confidence in navigating and modifying the workspace.  Browsing, opening and viewing documents.
2 Managing documents Focusing on defining, creating and modifying document attributes this module looks at the initial stages of developing InDesign files as well as using preset file types for quick setup.
3 Typography Whether you're creating, pasting, or importing text inside InDesign, how you achieve it and how it is handled will greatly affect its appearance. InDesign posses a myriad of typographic formatting and styling tools.
4 Working with objects Learn how to manage and define objects and their characteristics, be it text frames or graphic frames. Create libraries of content so that you can repurpose them and save valuable time.
5 Edit and review Once you have completed your design treatment, and placed your content  you will often need to perform simple tasks such as spelling and grammar, but you can also search and change specific content and check your document is error free and ready for output by using "Pre-flight".
6 Tables They can be found in abundance in everyday life, but tables provide an essential design aid. InDesign provides superb tools for defining every facet of a table's appearance, as well as saving pre-defined table styles that can be repurposed at the click of button.
Day 2
Lesson Description
1 Page Save valuable time by defining page characteristics with master pages, once adopted by pages in your document respond to the changes made just once to its master. Automate features such as page and chapter numbering.
2 Colour In this module you will explore ways to define specific colour from industry standard books, such as Pantone, as well as defining your own colour styles and applying them to objects in the document, and sharing custom colour libraries with colleagues.
3 Transparency and effects When you create an object in InDesign, by default it appears solid; that is, it has an opacity of 100%. You can apply effects to objects using opacity and blends. Overlap objects, add transparency to objects, or knock out shapes behind objects.
4 Working with Images Explore methods for placing raster and vector artwork within InDesign, and how to format its appearance and transform controls. Use the links panel to track updates and changes to the linked artwork.
6 Output Ensuring your document is setup for the intended output is just as important as managing its content. Learn how to prepare documents for Print and web publishing.
